This digest is the 34th in a series of publications initiated in 1962. It provides a compilation of statistical information covering the broad field of American education from kindergarten to graduate school. It includes more than 400 tables from both government and private sources, and draws especially on the results of surveys and activities carried out by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). It is divided into seven chapters: All levels of education, Elementary and secondary education, Postsecondary education, Federal programs for education and related activities, Outcomes of education, International comparisons of education, and Learning resources and technology. It updates the statistical information from previous years and contains a significant amount of new material. Show less

This report presents selected data on adults' participation in work-related educational activities in the United States over a 12-month period from 2002-03. These data are from the Adult Education for Work-Related Reasons [AEWR] Survey of the 2003 National Household Education Surveys [NHES] Program. Interviews were conducted with a nationally representative sample of the civilian, non-institutionalized population age 16 or older who were not enrolled in grade 12 or below. For the AEWR-NHES:2003 survey, work-related adult education was defined as both formal and informal learning activities that were done for reasons related to work. Findings indicate that during the 12-month period between early 2002 and early 2003, 40 per cent of adults in the United States took part in one or more formal adult educational activities for work-related reasons. Also, 58 per cent of adults who participated in adult educational activities for work-related reasons participated in informal learning activities for work-related reasons.

This report analyses the literacy proficiencies of the nation’s adults in relation to their schooling, with a special focus on adults who did not complete high school, those whose proficiencies were below average, and those who enrolled in programs to improve their basic literacy. The findings were based on data from the 1992 National Adult Literacy Survey. Field staff for this survey interviewed nearly 13,600 individuals aged 16 and older throughout the nation, as well as adults 16 to 65 years old in each of 11 states that chose to participate in a special study designed to provide state-level results. This 1992 survey measured literacy proficiencies using performance across a wide array of tasks that reflect the types of reading materials and literacy demands that adults encounter in their daily lives.

This report compares the US education system with other major industrialised countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Russian Federation, and the UK), using data from three main sources: the OECD's Indicators of National Education Systems (INES) project; the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) assessments; and the OECD's Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). The report contains an introduction, a highlight of the key findings, and 31 indicators comparing different aspects of the education systems in the US and the seven other countries, organised in five areas: (1) the context of education; (2) preprimary and primary education; (3) secondary education (encompassing lower secondary education and upper secondary education); (4) higher education (vocational programs and academic programs); and (5) education and the labour force. Each indicator is presented in a two-page format: the first page contains the key findings, a definition of the indicator and a description of the methodology used to produce the indicator; the second page presents graphs to support the key findings, sources of data for the indicator and notes on interpreting the results. Data presented in these tables come from the 2003-04 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:04/06), a survey that tracks new postsecondary students through their postsecondary education and into the labor force. In 2003-04, BPS:04/06 students had just entered postsecondary education for the first time. These tables focus on these students' demographic characteristics as well as the factors they considered before selecting a postsecondary institution and the reasons they chose the postsecondary institution in which they enrolled. Results are displayed separately for recent high school graduates and nonrecent high school graduates by the type of institution in which they were enrolled: public 2-year, public 4-year, or private not-for-profit 4-year colleges.

This ‘Statistics in brief’ uses data from the 2005 High School Transcript Study (HSTS) to examine the career/technical education (CTE) coursetaking of public high school graduates using new indicators of participation. These indicators examine the extent to which students participate in CTE and in specific occupational areas (such as agriculture and business) broadly (many students earning credits) versus deeply (many credits earned by participating students). First, the brief looks at student participation across the three main CTE curriculum areas (family and consumer sciences education, general labor market preparation, and occupational education). Second, the brief looks at coursetaking within occupational areas, including occupational concentration. Finally, the brief examines coursetaking across occupational areas, including the areas that students tend to combine. Findings indicate that high school graduates’ use of the CTE curriculum is generally broad rather than narrow in the sense that most (70 per cent) earn credits in both occupational education and either general labor market preparation or family and consumer sciences education, and most (58 per cent) earn credits in more than one occupational area. Five occupational areas had the broadest participation (i.e., had the greatest number of graduates earning credits in the area): business; communications and design; manufacturing, repair, and transportation; consumer and culinary services; and computer and information sciences. The occupational areas with the deepest levels of participation were manufacturing, repair, and transportation; agriculture and natural resources; health sciences; and construction and architecture. Finally, some occupational areas were more likely than others to be taken together. For example, marketing coursetakers were more likely than other occupational coursetakers to earn credits in business.
